How to Become a Notary Republic in Michigan
Notaries in the state of Michigan are public officers commissioned by the Secretary of State. A notary public witnesses signatures and authenticates official and legal documents. When you are commissioned as a notary in Michigan, you can perform notary duties anywhere in the state. As a notary, you can find employment with banks and government offices as well as being self-employed. All notaries in the state of Michigan are required to read the Notary Public Act, 2003 PA 238. Check the eligibility requirements on Michigan's Department of State website. You must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, read and speak English fluently and be a resident of Michigan. You cannot have had any felony convictions in the last 10 years and cannot have more than two misdemeanors on your record within the last 12-month period.

Download and fill out the notary application form from the state's website. Supply your full name, driver's license number, residential address, business address (if applicable), date of birth and telephone number. The address on your driver's license must match the address on your application.

File a $10,000 surety bond and take an oath of office at your county clerk's office. Obtain a surety bond from a local bonding or insurance company. The state's website has a list of agencies. You are required to pay a filing fee with the county. Check with your county clerk's office for the amount of the fee.

Mail your completed application and a check or money order made out to the "State of Michigan" for the processing fee. As of May 2010, the fee is $10. The application and fee must be mailed within 90 days of filing the surety bond and taking the oath at your county clerk's office. Purchase your notary stamp at a local office supply store after you receive your notary commission certificate. The Office of the Great Seal will send your certificate within 14 days of receiving your application.
