How to Become a Social Worker in Canada thumbnail
Helping others as a social worker can be extremely rewarding to everyone involved.

A career in social work can be extremely rewarding and satisfying. The field is vast, with opportunities available in many different capacities, serving people with varying levels of education. To become a social worker in Canada, you need to fulfill the requirements of your province.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the requirements for your province. In Canada, the regulations for social work are the responsibility of the province. Six Canadian provinces have joined forces to create a governing regulatory body (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland). However, if you plan on working in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia or New Brunswick, each province has its own regulatory body. Although there are many similarities in regulations for all provinces, there are also differences, and you will need to research the specific requirements in the province you wish to work in.

Educational and experience requirements vary between different jobs in the social worker field. Make sure you research what is needed for the specific job you will target.

Get educated. A variety of programs of study can lead you to a career as a social worker. Programs are offered at colleges and universities. Each program has different entry requirements and could lead to a different career path. For example, some university programs could qualify you for a position as a therapist, and some college programs could result in meeting the requirements to become an employment counselor. Before enrolling in a specific program, research the career opportunities it could lead to and decide if it's an area you are interested in.

    • 3

Become licensed. Once you have completed your program, it's important to become a licensed social worker. A license proves to employers that you are qualified to do the work that is required. Licenses are granted from the Canadian Association of Social Workers through the provincial associations. Check with the Canadian Association of Social Workers for the requirements to become a licensed social worker in your province. You are usually required to obtain an application package, fill out the application information and pay the annual membership fees.

Research job opportunities. From working in hospitals with patients to working in community centers with youth, a variety of social work career opportunities exist. Research which ones are available in your area. Many of the provincial association websites provide information about existing job opportunities within that province. Some schools provide job placement and/or internship opportunities. Check with your school to see if they offer such services.

Further your education. Social work practices and theories are constantly changing and being improved. To stay relevant and effective in your field it's important to further your education. There are many different resources available to keep you informed and up to date on current industry standards, practices and developments. Check with your provincial association of social workers for appropriate resources and information.
