Reboot a computer using shutdown.

Windows XP contains a command prompt where you can carry out several Windows tasks. The "shutdown" command allows you to reboot or log out of a machine. Network administrators use the "shutdown" command to reboot remote computers on the network. The command is executed from the Windows command prompt, and it stops all services and applications immediately to reboot the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button. Click "Run" and enter "cmd" into the text box. Click "OK." This starts the command prompt.

    • 2

Type "shutdown -r" and press "Enter." This reboots your Windows XP machine from the command prompt.

    • 3

Type "shutdown -a" to abort the reboot if you choose not to shut down the machine. You only have a few seconds to cancel before the computer reboots.
