Set up Hotmail in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Thunderbird is an email program made by Mozilla. The application allows you to send and receive--as well as organize--email messages from your Hotmail account. This eliminates the need to open a browser and log in to your Hotmail account each time you want to read your messages.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your Thunderbird application. Click "Tools" in the main menu bar. Scroll down and click "Account Settings."

    • 2

Click the "Add Account" button in the left column of the next page. Click the radio button next to "Email account" on the next page.

    • 3

Type your name and Hotmail email address in the appropriate fields on the next window.

    • 4

Click the radio button next to the POP for the incoming server type. Type "pop3.live.com" in the "Incoming Server" field.

    • 5

Type your username for this account in the next field and type in a name you wish to give this account on the next page.

    • 6

Click the "Finish" button. Go back to the "Account Settings" page. Under the account name you just created, click "Server Settings." Make sure the number in the "Port" field is "995" and that the radio button next to "SSL" is filled. Put a check mark next to any of the server settings that you wish, such as "Leave messages on server" and "Empty Trash on Exit."

    • 7

Go back to the "Account Settings" page and click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)." Click the "Add" button.

    • 8

Give a name for the server and type it in the "Description" field. Type "smtp.live.com in the "Server Name" field. Type "587" in the "Port" field. Type your username in the "User Name" field and put a check mark in the box next to "Use name and password." Put the radio button next to "TLS" and hit the "OK" button.
