The 22R engine built by Toyota was a popular engine for many years, as it was very reliable and able to run for thousands of miles. The engine was commonly found in Toyota pickups from the 1980s to 1990s. Because the engines can run for so long, sometimes components that wouldn't normally break do, such as the ignition switch. If the engine won't turn over and the switch isn't activating the starter, then you have to replace the ignition switch with a new one. First though, you have to remove the broken switch.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Paper clip
Unscrew the three screws holding the bottom of the steering column cover to the top of the steering column cover using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the cover apart and set it to the side.
Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the accessory position. Locate the retaining-pin hole on the side of the ignition switch, facing the back side of the steering wheel. Straighten out the paper clip. Push the retaining pin out, using the paper clip.
Unscrew the switch from the column using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the switch out of the housing.
