Vintage furniture is furniture that accurately represents or comes from a certain time period. Vintage furniture can come from any past time period, the 1700s or the 1960s. Many homeowners own vintage furniture. However, just because some of your home furnishings are vintage furniture, that doesn't mean you can't bring it up to date with a coat of paint. Learn how to paint your vintage furniture for a modern look.
Things You'll Need
- Chemical stripper
- Putty knife
- Wire brush
- Fine grit sandpaper
- Damp rag
- Latex paint
Strip the vintage furniture with a chemical stripper, a putty knife and a wire brush. Apply the chemical stripper with a paintbrush. Let the chemical stripping agent soak into the furniture as recommended by the stripping chemical manufacturer. Once you have let the stripper sit, remove it with a putty knife. The wire brush will allow you to get into the small crevices common in vintage furniture. Follow the directions of the manufacturer to remove the stripper from the furniture. Let the piece dry completely.
Lightly sand the furniture with fine sandpaper. Wipe the dust from the piece with a damp rag.
Apply primer to the vintage piece of furniture with a paintbrush. A light coat of primer is all that is needed to prime the furniture piece. Give the primer several hours to dry before painting.
Coat the vintage furniture with latex paint. Apply the first coat of latex paint and let it dry completely. Again, it is important to apply a light coat of paint to the furniture. After the first coat of latex paint is dry, paint on a second coat of paint. Wait for that coat of paint to dry. Once the second coat of paint is dry you will need to decide if the piece of furniture needs another coat. Apply a third coat of paint if you are going to be using the furniture a lot, or if the paint is still patchy.
Let the painted piece of vintage furniture dry for several days before using it.
