Remove the light fixture on the fan by taking off the switch housing.

A ceiling fan has a light fixture, commonly called a light kit, that attaches to the base of the control or switch housing in two ways. The light fixture has a hollow, threaded nipple that mounts to the switch housing with a nut. In addition, the light fixture's wires are attached to the wires from the switch housing. To take off a light fixture from a ceiling fan, you have to get the fixture off the switch housing, and the switch housing off the fan. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the fan at the switch in the breaker box. Try to turn on the fan to check that the power is off.

    • 2

Place the ladder below the fan and climb it. Have the Phillips-head screwdriver and crescent wrench nearby.

    • 3

Remove the screws on the side of the switch housing that mount the housing over the fan motor, using the screwdriver. Do this carefully as you must hold the weight of the switch housing and light fixture when the screws are all removed.

    • 4

Disconnect the large plug from the ceiling fan motor from the socket in the switch housing. Bring the switch housing and light fixture down from the ladder.

    • 5

Remove the wire nuts from the connections one by one until all of the wire connections between the switch housing and light fixture are disconnected.

    • 6

Push the wires out of the way until you see the nut holding the nipple from the light fixture in place. Use the crescent wrench, turning counterclockwise, to loosen this nut and take it off the nipple. Pull the light fixture off the switch housing.
