Purchasing sculpting clay from an art supply store can be expensive and work no differently than a clay you can whip up at home. With a few inexpensive ingredients that are likely already in the kitchen pantry, you can create a homemade sculpting clay without leaving the house.

Clay From Water and Flour

Sculpting clay comprises two main ingredients; flour and water. Food coloring is used to create colored sculpting clay. Purchase a food color shade, then pour 1/2 cup warm water into a bowl, and stir in the food coloring (follow ratio instructions on the box). Pour one cup of flour into a bowl, and slowly add in one cup of warm water, then slowly stir in the colored water mixture. Add water until a thick dough is formed, as this is the consistency you're looking to achieve.

Clay From Water and Cornstarch

Pour 2/3 cup of water into a saucepan and heat. Add in two cups of salt, and a few drops of desired food coloring if you would like colored sculpting clay. Pull the saucepan off the burner, and slowly stir in one cup of cornstarch, making sure to mix a smooth, even consistency. Pour in 1/2 cup of cold water, stir, and allow the mixture to cool. This will form a doughy clay, perfect for sculpting.

Clay From Bread

This is another easy homemade clay, but requires a bit of elbow grease. Cut the crusts off six slices of bread, and begin kneading. Slowly add in 1/2 cup dish detergent, along with six spoonfuls of white craft glue. When the dough ball is a consistent texture, and no longer sticky, you can add a few drops of food coloring to give the clay color. Continue kneading until an even color is achieved. The clay is ready for sculpting.
