How to Make Dough Bait to Catch Catfish thumbnail
Use dough bait to catch catfish.

Catfish dough bait is usually made from flour, corn meal and a strong-scented ingredient such as anise or garlic. It is one of the few catfish baits that you can use right after it has been made. It also freezes well and lasts a long time.

Things You'll Need

  • Sauce pan
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 20 oz bottle of big red soda
  • Anise oil
  • Waxed paper
  • Extra flour for kneading
  • Freezer bag or container with lid

Instructions

    • 1

Add corn meal, 1 cup of flour and anise oil to a saucepan. Use just enough anise oil to give your dough a strong scent.

    • 2

Add 3/4 bottle of red soda to the pan and cook on medium heat. Stir the mixture constantly until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the dough is stiff and sticky.

    • 3

Lay out the wax paper and sprinkle liberally with flour. Place the dough mixture onto the waxed paper.

    • 4

Knead the dough mixture for at least 15 minutes, just as you would bread dough, adding more flour until it is no longer sticky.

    • 5

Pull the mixture into pieces and roll into 1 inch balls. Put the dough balls in a freezer bag or container with lid. Use right away or freeze until you are ready to use them.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can experiment with this recipe adding a different scent or more or less liquid or flour until it reaches the consistency that you prefer.
