Homemade Catfish Dough Bait
There are legions of catfish anglers with their own special homemade baits. These baits usually involve some "secret" ingredient that no catman will ever divulge, but there is no secret to attracting catfish. Baits may vary, but they all have one thing in common: they stink. If it smells bad to you, chances are catfish will be drawn to it like a magnet. So here is one simple catfish dough recipe, to which you can add your own ingredients and experiment until you discover some secret ingredients of your own.

Mix 1 pound extra-sharp cheddar cheese, 8 ounces raw pork (you may substitute 8 ounces of raw perch), 1 whole head of fresh garlic (you may substitute 4 tablespoons of garlic salt), 1 can of dog or cat food, and 1 dozen minnows in a food processor until thoroughly blended.

Add flour and continue mixing until the mixture is doughy. It should be solid enough to stay on a hook, but gooey enough to be malleable.

Mold the dough onto a treble hook in 1-inch balls, or mold it around a catfish jig. Fish the bait on or near bottom in deep holes during the day, or on flats where catfish come to feed at night.

Tips & Warnings
Do not refrigerate the dough between uses. Catfish love smelly, rotten foods, so if the dough starts to go bad it will only become more attractive to fish. Feel free to experiment by adding or changing ingredients. Most kinds of fish and meat can attract catfish (they love chicken livers). This dough should attract most catfish species, including blue catfish, channel cats, flatheads, and bullheads.
