How to List a House for Section 8 Housing in Muskegon, Michigan thumbnail
It's easy to offer your property to people with Section 8.

You can work with your local housing authority, operating under the Department of Housing and Urban Development, to list your property as Section 8 housing, which allows you to accept vouchers from needy families. Doing this helps the Muskegon community by providing increased housing for families who otherwise might not be able to find it; it also help you by expanding your client base and offering security in the form of government housing assistance vouchers, which will never be late or invalid.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the Muskegon Heights Housing Commission at 231-733-2033 and set up an appointment to go in person and discuss listing your property as a Section 8 rental.

    • 2

Read Housing and Urban Development Code of Federal Regulations Sec. 982.401: Housing quality standards, linked below in References. You must be sure that your property is safe, well-kept, and that it meets the standards set forth by the code.

    • 3

Hire a local home inspector to come in and view the property you wish to list. You can find a listing of home inspectors near Muskegon below in Resources. Ask them to write a letter stating that your property meets Section 8 housing guidelines.

    • 4

Attend the meeting with the Muskegon Heights housing authority and fill out the forms they give you. You'll have to give your personal information, information about the property you're renting, and information about how much rent you'll charge. If you ask for an amount far over the value of the property, your application may be denied.

    • 5

Include "Accepts Section 8" or "Section 8 Accepted" on all property listings and advertisements once you've been approved. While Muskegon Section 8 participants choose their own housing, they'll know that your apartment is an option when you list this in the ads.
