How to Remove Rust From Fishing Hooks

A clean, rust-free hook.

Use vinegar to remove rust from fishhooks. Rust develops on fishhooks if they are left wet. If rust is left on fishhooks, it can get into the fish caught. It can also get into your blood stream if you are stuck with a rusty hook, which will make you sick. Vinegar breaks down the rust particles and won't harm the fish, if there is any residue on the hooks.

Things You'll Need

• Rubber gloves
• Cereal bowl
• White distilled vinegar
• Paper towels
• Water

Instructions

1. 

   Regular rubber kitchen gloves will protect your skin from the rust.

   Put on gloves to protect your hands from the rust.

2. Place the fish hook into the cereal bowl.

3. Pour enough vinegar into the bowl to cover the hooks. Leave the hooks in the vinegar for three to four hours.

4. Lay two or three paper towels stacked on a flat surface. Remove the hooks from the bowl and place them on the paper towels. Use another paper towel to wipe off the hooks. Air dry hooks.

5. Dump the vinegar down a drain. Rinse out the bowl with water.
