How to Pass the CNA Test

The CNA Exam is a test that people have to take to become a certified nursing assistant. If you pass the exam, then you are placed on the Nurse Aide Registry and are able to apply for entry-level nursing aide occupations. The test has both a written component and a practical component. Therefore, it tests both knowledge and skills. To pass the test, understand the format of the exam, know the material that you need to study for it, study the information that you learned in class, read the CNA review books, and take practice exams.

Things You'll Need

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Computer
  • Understand the format of the CNA exam. To pass the test, you need to understand how it is set up. The written part of the exam consists of multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 70 of the questions. The practical part of the test is composed of five skills that you must demonstrate.

  • Know the material that you need to study for the exam. The multiple-choice questions are based on how the nurse should interact with the client, as well as certain medical terms such as a prosthesis. The practical portion of the exam consists of skills such as taking the weight of a client, the blood pressure and the pulse. Therefore, when studying for the test, you should focus on the skills needed to provide the patient with proper care.

  • Study the information that you learned in class. Before taking the CNA exam, most students have taken a nursing aide course. The course is designed to teach you the information that you need to master for the exam. To pass the test, study your notes from class. For example, review how to take the blood pressure of a patient.

  • Read the CNA review book. To pass the test, you should read the book so that way you can become more familiar with the concepts that will be tested. As you read, take notes on the various chapters to remember the information more clearly. You can purchase the review book online or at the bookstore.

  • Do practice CNA exams. By taking them, you will have more experience with the format of the exam. Try to complete at least one practice exam each day. Remember to correct any answers that you did not answer correctly.

  • Walk through the various tasks that could be asked on the practical portion of the exam. To pass the CNA test, you can practice some of the tasks on a friend. For example, you can take the pulse of your friend. As you complete the task, make sure that you remember all of the necessary steps.

  • Obtain enough sleep before the exam, and remember the basic test taking strategies. To pass the test, remain calm and do not spend too much time on questions that you do not know how to answer. For the practical portion of the exam, remember to always wash your hands before performing any task, knock on the door before entering the patient's room, and respect the privacy of the patient.
