How to Turn Off the Check Engine Light on a 1998 VW Golf
Your 1998 VW Golf uses an on-board diagnostic system to warn you when there is a serious problem with the sensors on the vehicle. When a problem does arise, the "check engine" light on the dash illuminates. This light means that service is required. You can run a diagnostic check on the system by using a scan tool. However, once you have figured out what's wrong with your Golf, you need to reset the "check engine" light on the dash.
