How to Use a Handicapped Placard in Other States

A handicapped parking placard advises others that the person driving or riding in a vehicle has the legal right to use a handicapped parking space as the result of a disability. As each state in the United States has different driving rules, many people naturally assume that special requirements must exist in each state to use a handicapped placard. Thankfully, this is not the case—all states have agreed to recognize and honor handicapped/disabled parking placards from other states as long as the placard is non-expired, legally used and openly displayed.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull into a handicapped parking space—designated with the internationally recognized handicapped symbol of a stick figure sitting in a wheelchair.

    • 2

Place the placard on your dashboard or hang it from the rear view mirror so that anyone looking into the vehicle can see it clearly through the window.

    • 3

Remove the placard when you leave the space.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don’t have your placard in your vehicle for some reason while travelling between states (for example, if you removed it while cleaning the vehicle), but do have the international handicapped symbol on your license plate, don’t worry—the license plate symbol is also honored by other states.

  • Handicapped drivers and passengers should have proof of placard registration on hand should any questions arise about the use of the placard.

  • Canada and Mexico also recognize U.S. handicapped parking placards.
