How to Remove the Pulley From the Power Steering Pump on a Sunfire

The Pontiac Sunfire is available as a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan, with a standard four-cylinder engine. The power steering pump pulley in the Sunfire is connected to the engine by one metal bolt in the center of the pulley. The drive belt and power steering pump pulley must be removed in order to gain access to the power steering pump.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the Sunfire, and loosen the metal securing clamp connecting the air intake hose to the engine, using the screwdriver. Pull the air intake hose out of the way of the engine pulleys and drive belt.

    • 2

Place the engine pulley removal tool over the center of the pulley closest to the radiator (the tensioner pulley). Lock the key in the center of the pulley tool onto the nut in the center of the pulley by turning the key. Connect the power drill to the pulley tool and pull the trigger until the drive bet loosens.

    • 3

Pull the drive belt off the power steering pump pulley. Connect the pulley removal tool to the power steering pump pulley the same way that you connected it to the tension pulley. Completely remove the nut from the center of the power steering pump pulley using the pulley removal tool, and remove the pulley from the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • To avoid serious burns, allow the engine to completely cool off before you work on the engine.
