How To Rear Miniature Schnauzers
The word "schnauzer" means "small beard" in German, and seems to be an accurate description of miniature schnauzer dogs. The dogs were originally bred in Germany to hunt mice and other vermin, and today the American Kennel Club advises that they are the most popular of all schnauzer breeds. Schnauzers can make energetic and loveable family pets, but can be prone to some health and behavior issues if not properly cared for.

1
Socialize your miniature schnauzer with other puppies and a lot of human contact from a very early age. These dogs are friendly and energetic, and need companionship to avoid becoming overaggressive or mean-spirited.
-
2
Walk you miniature schnauzer at least once per day; the walk should last at least 20 to 30 minutes. Schnauzers are full of energy, and if they are not properly exercised the energy may transfer to behavior problems such as chewing or constant barking.

3
Provide the schnauzer with toys such as balls, rope and other dog toys. The schnauzer will want to play constantly to get rid of his pent-up energy. Play with him when possible, especially if you can take him outdoors into a yard or park without a leash. With proper toys, he should be able to entertain himself, so long as he is walked and occasionally played with.
-
4
Feed your schnauzer on a strict, low fat and unsweetened diet. Good foods for a schnauzer include pork, beef, potatoes, wheat and beets. These dogs are prone to kidney stones, diabetes, liver failure and other such digestive diseases; these problems worsen if the dog is overweight.
-
5
Brush your schnauzer daily with a short wire brush to prevent his thick hair from matting and tangling. The schnauzers do not shed; in general, a clipping or trimming in the spring and fall will keep his hair neat and easy to handle.
-
6
Train your schnauzer with a system of positive reinforcements, such as giving him a treat when he sits on command. These dogs do not respond well to punishment; if you try to punish the schnauzer he will mistrust you and will misbehave more.
