Typewriters are the word-processing work-horses of yore. Their decline has mainly been due to the advent of electronic word-processing. However, some people still use typewriters for various reasons: aesthetic, novelty or just preference. Typewriters come in two forms; manual and electronic. Replacing the ink is not the same process for both types. The main difference being that manual typewriters use ink ribbons and electronic ones use cartridges. However, the process itself is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

      Lift off the top of the typewriter.

      Remove the old ribbon from the spool. If it is an electronic typewriter, remove cartridge according to manufacturer's details.

      Place new ribbon on spool and carefully thread in front of the roller. For electronic typewriters, insert the new cartridge until it snaps into place.

      Close the typewriter.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may be able to re-use a manual ribbon by using the reverse side.

  • When replacing a manual ink ribbon, remember to wash your hands afterward.
