DIY Four Foot Aquarium Sump Design
Sump is another word for cesspool and it is an appropriate name for the sump systems that are used to help filtrate the water of an aquarium. This is because dirty water is collected into the sump system from the aquarium, cleaned, and then returned to the original aquarium. Sump systems don't have to be fancy, they don't have to be expensive and they don't have to be purchased. You can make a sump system at home using a small, four-foot aquarium.
Things You'll Need

1
Place a water pump in the bottom of a four-foot aquarium and attach a PVC pipe long enough to carry water up out of the sump and into the aquarium being filtered.
-
2
Insert a layer of aquarium rocks and aquarium-safe charcoal over the water pump at the bottom of the sump.

3
Place an aquarium sponge over the layer of aquarium rocks and charcoal.

Insert a water pump into the aquarium that is to be filtered by the sump. Attach a PVC pipe to it that is long enough to get water from the aquarium to the sump. Dirty water will come from the aquarium into the sump via this pipe. The aquarium rocks, charcoal and sponge will work as a mechanical filter to grab onto any undissolved wastes in the water. The charcoal will chemically clean pollutants from the water. Finally, the sponge, charcoal and aquarium rocks will grow healthy bacteria that will help eliminate ammonia from the water and help keep the pH levels balanced inside your aquarium.
