How to Repair a PC Monitor

How to Repair a PC Monitor thumbnail
Cable placement, backlight issues and inverter problems can plague your monitor.

If your PC monitor isn't operating properly, you aren't going to be able to get anything done on your computer, no matter how well it may otherwise be performing. Fortunately, it doesn't take the assistance of a computer professional or an existing base of computer repair knowledge to fix your PC monitor. While you will want an additional computer available for monitor-testing purposes, the only tool needed for PC monitor repair is a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Check for connectivity issues. Make sure the PC monitor is connected to your computer and that this connection has not come loose; otherwise, no information can be sent to and received by your monitor.

    • 2

Check the brightness settings on your PC monitor. Keep in mind that occasionally the brightness may have been turned all the way down on your monitor by accident. If so, this will result in black display. Your PC monitor should have dedicated brightness keys on its face. Alternatively, brightness keys will be located on the top row of your keyboard as well.

    • 3

Connect your PC monitor up to a computer other than the one you are currently using. Turn on the computer and monitor and see if the monitor now displays information properly instead of remaining blank. If so, the problem does not lie within the monitor itself, but rather your computer's motherboard. Instead of replacing the motherboard, it will likely be just as cost effective to replace your computer altogether. If your PC monitor still doesn't work, an internal display problem exists.

Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws that surround the bezel of your PC monitor. Depending on the model of your monitor, these screws will be either on the front bezel or on the back of the display along the perimeter. Remove all these screws and lay them aside.

Peel the bezel off from the rest of the display now that it is loose. Start at one corner and take care not to damage it.

    • 6

Locate the inverter cable, which will run across the top of the inverter board. This board will be at the bottom center of the display and is visible with the bezel removed. Reconnect the inverter cable to the inverter board if it has become disconnected, as the inverter cable enables the display of your monitor to run properly. The inverter cable runs into the connector on the inverter board. After reinserting the cable, snap the connector down into the "locked" position, which will lay the connector flat against the display as opposed to upright and vertical.
