How to Decorate a Bedroom with Maps
Decorate your bedroom or your child's bedroom with maps to celebrate your passion for the "Old World," your traveling adventures or dreams, your passion for exploring or simply because you like maps. You can use the maps as the bulk of your decor or only use a couple of prized maps so they stand out in the room. The rest of your bedroom decor should complement the maps, but serve as a backdrop to let the maps function as the focus of the bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Paint the walls in a light, neutral shade such as cream, beige or a pale yellow so the maps will stand out. Paint a mural on one entire wall or use a series of old maps to create a wallpaper effect. If you can't paint the walls, use an adhesive world map decal or hang maps in decorative frames.
-
2
Pair dark furniture with a light color scheme or an Old World look, or light furniture if you're using dark colors. Choose hefty antique-styled furniture if you're going for an antique look. A child's room could hold white furniture or a dark stain. Put the bed against the wall under a large map.

3
Make the bed with neutral-colored bedding that complement the color scheme in the room or adds to the theme. Bedding that looks like a map can work for a child's room if there isn't too much on the walls.
-
4
Place a rug next to the bed or in the center of the room. A neutral colored rug or a rug that incorporates the colors in your color scheme will work for an adult's room. Use a map-themed play rug or other novelty rug for a child's room.
-
5
Strategically place accessories throughout the room that go with your specific theme. For example, use a lamp that resembles a globe or a lampshade imprinted with a map. Or place a globe on top of your dresser or use an old-style free standing globe.

Tips & Warnings
Add pins to a map to pinpoint the places you've been, or where you plan to go. Line a shelf with little figurines or keepsakes from those places or pin pictures of you in front of landmarks on the map.
Stack old luggage pieces on top of each other in lieu of a nightstand and use them for extra storage.
Maps can accentuate pirate and safari themes.
Collect old maps from National Geographic magazines if you don't already have some.
Make newer maps look old by ironing out the creases, crumbling them up and staining them with tea or coffee. Tear or burn the edges if you want a really antique, weathered look.
Avoid using too many maps or they'll just blend together without meaning or impact. Spread out the maps or limit them to one wall and one surface, such as a globe on the dresser.
