How Do I Renew My UK Passport in Scotland?
UK passports apply to all countries in the United Kingdom, and the procedure for renewal is the same in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Passport renewal in the UK is carried out by the Identity and Passport Service. You can renew your passport at any time within nine months of the expiration of your current passport and the IPS will add that time--up to nine months--to your current passport.

1
Check the official IPS website to make sure you qualify for a new passport. You can apply if you still have your current passport, it is undamaged and you do not need to change your name or national status.
-
2
Locate an application form. If you have Internet access, the IPS website directs you to an online application form. Once you have completed the form online, the IPS will send the form to you to sign it. You can request the form by telephone or pick up an application form at any Post Office that offers the Check & Send service.

3
Sign the application form. If your appearance has changed significantly from the photograph in your current passport, you need your form countersigned by someone who is over 18, holds a British or Irish Republic passport and has known you for at least two years.
-
4
Photocopy relevant pages showing visas and stamps for your reference. You may need these if you need replacements later.
-
5
Send the completed form to the IPS along with your current passport and two identical passport-size photographs. Your old passport will be canceled when you are issued a new one.
-
6
You can track your application online using the IPS website. Applications are usually processed within three weeks from the time they arrive at the Passport Office. However it can take longer at busy times of the year. The Post Office Check & Send service offers quicker processing, but there is an additional fee involved.

Tips & Warnings
If you require a name change in your new passport because of marriage or civil partnership, you must get your passport amended. You can do this in the same way and even do it before the name change itself.
If you require a new passport within two weeks, the IPS offers a Fast Track premium service with an appointment only through their helpline. As of 2010, the Passport Adviceline number is 0300-222-0000.
