People possessing either novice or advanced construction skills who spend time making or fixing items usually have an electric or cordless drill in their tool collection. Because a drill is a versatile tool, enabling the completion of many odd jobs and construction tasks, it gets frequent use around a home. As you prepare to use your drill, select and then install a drill bit in the correct size to enable you to drill correctly.
Things You'll Need
- Chuck key
Insert the chuck key into the hole on the side of the chuck. Find the chuck at the rotating end of drill where you insert the drill bit. Rotate the chuck key to the left to loosen the chuck enough to allow you to insert the drill bit.
Stick the end of the correct drill bit into the hole in the end of the chuck. Push the drill bit into the point just before the threads begin on the drill bit.
Rotate the chuck key to the right to tighten the chuck around the drill bit. Stop tightening the chuck when the key will not turn any more.
Tips & Warnings
- Make sure you use the proper drill bit for your construction project. Choose from twist drill bits for drilling through wood, metal or plastic; spade bits used to make larger holes in wood; masonry bits for drilling through concrete or brick; and bits that enable you to drive screws with your drill.
