How to Remove Skirting Board

Save

The skirting boards are the trim that runs around the base of the room along the wall. There are many reasons that would require you to remove the skirting boards in a room. If you want to replace the flooring, attach wallpaper, renovate a wall or install new skirting boards you will need to take the skirting away. Luckily you can take it off yourself fairly easily. The job is messy, so you may want to line the room with drop cloths or old sheets.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Paint scraper
  • Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Handsaw
  • Cut along the top of the trim where it is painted over. Use a utility knife to cut into the paint as close to the trim as you can get.

  • Wedge a wide paint scraper between the skirting board and the wall until the scraper is securely in place.

  • Slip a chisel in between the scraper and the skirting board.

  • Bang the end of the chisel handle in with a hammer.

  • Lever the chisel until the skirting begins to lift away from the wall.

  • Cut the skirting where it has come away from the wall with a handsaw.

  • Work along the wall following the same steps until all of the skirting has been removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use wide tools to distribute the pressure and cause less damage.
  • Work very slowly if you intend to reuse the boards or you may create breaks in the skirting and make them unusable.
