How to Use Cypress Mulch

Cypress mulch is the shredded bark of the cypress tree. Unlike other types of mulch, which look like nuggets, cypress mulch has a softer, shredded appearance. It is light in color, which benefits plants because it does not retain heat like darker colored mulch. Cypress mulch repels some types of insects; however, it attracts termites. You use cypress mulch in a home's outdoor landscaping in much the same way as other mulches. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a 4 to 6-inch layer of cypress mulch onto flower beds and garden areas. Use a rake to spread the mulch out into an even layer.

    • 2

Use a garden spade, or gloved hands, to pull back the mulch around the base of each plant so that there is a 3 to 4 inch area of space. This space prevents pests and disease from infecting the plant.

    • 3

Rake the cypress mulch approximately once per month to mix the top layer down into the lower layers. This prevents water from beading up on top of the mulch rather than soaking down into the soil.

    • 4

Examine the surface of the cypress mulch regularly for signs of a fungus called bird's nest fungus. Bird's nest fungus looks like tiny white spiderwebs that form a bird nest shape. Use a shovel to scoop out any fungal infections and dispose of them in the trash.

    • 5

Add an additional 1 to 2 inches of cypress mulch in the fall and again in the spring. Cypress mulch naturally decomposes into the soil, so you can simply add new mulch on top of the old instead of removing it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some counties in Florida do not allow the use of cypress mulch for conservation reasons.
