How Do I Calculate Tax, Title and License on a Car?
Before you go to register your car, it is helpful to know what kind of fees will be expected of you at the Department of Motor Vehicles. These fees vary from state to state and are often based on how much the vehicle you are registering cost when you bought it. There is no way to reduce the cost of your tax, title and license, so you should factor them into the cost of purchasing a car when you are determining your budget.

Go to the website for your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Search the site for "Fees."

Use the fee tables that appear in the search to calculate how much your total cost will be. Use the year of your car to determine the registration fee and its purchase price to determine the tax cost. Your motor vehicle license fee will be the same no matter what your car is or how much it is worth.

Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles in person with your car title. Ask them to calculate the fees for you if you are unable to complete the process online.

Use the online calculator at Carmax to determine the tax, title and license fees for your car based on the purchase price and state of registration. Some states, like California, also offer Vehicle Registration Fee calculators on their Department of Motor Vehicles website (see Resources).
