How to Overcome Bad Grades

How to Overcome Bad Grades thumbnail
Don't let bad grades get you down.

Children who get bad grades may drop out of school or refuse to further their education by getting a college degree. If you get bad grades, you may feel that school just isn't your thing or that you are stupid. This isn't the case. Bad grades could mean that you have a different learning style or that you just aren't getting the help that you need. You don't have to settle for bad grades. With a bit of effort, you can turn things around.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine why you are getting bad grades. You may know already that you do poorly on tests or that you are frequently late in turning in homework, but if you're not sure why your grades are bad, ask your teacher for her input. Knowing this will help you to overcome bad grades.

    • 2

Create a study timetable. You need to spend time studying each subject if you want to do well. Set aside certain periods of the day to focus on your school work. In this time, you should do your homework and study for upcoming tests.

    • 3

Learn according to your personal learning style. Traditional education works best for kids who learn well through listening or reading. That may not be true for you. If you learn best from doing things, look for ways that you can incorporate your school material into these learning techniques.

    • 4

Turn your homework in on time. Many teachers place a big emphasis on homework assignments and simply turning them in could improve your grade.

    • 5

Focus on your strong points. When applying for college or scholarships, you can't do anything to change the grades that you've gotten in the past. You can, however, highlight your strengths. For example, you can write a solid essay explaining why you deserve to go to the school. If testing is a strong point for you, a good SAT score may overshadow a poor GPA.

Tips & Warnings

  • A private tutor can help you if you have problems in a particular subject area.
