How to Pin Curls
According to Hair Boutique, the pin curl was the foundation for most hairstyles during the 1940s. Pin curls were popular throughout the 1940s, 50s and 60s, particularly among women who wore their hair short. This hairstyle technique is simple to create and has the advantage that you do not have to go to bed with curlers in your hair, but will still wake up with a head of curls you can style as you please. Wash your hair and towel-dry. Pin curls do not turn out well when made with dry hair.

Part your hair down the center and divide it into one- or two-inch sections, depending on how big you want the curls.

Comb a section of hair from the top of your head until it is smooth and resembles a ribbon. Spray it with water or hairspray.

Wind the smoothed hair in a clockwise manner around the index finger of your non-dominant hand. Hair Boutique advises to make sure you wind the hair without twisting it.

Carefully slip the wound hair off your finger with your other hand's thumb and forefinger to help the curl keep its shape. Ensure the end of the hair is tucked inside the curl and continue to wind the hair towards the scalp.

Pin the hair flat over the section of scalp where it naturally grows, not away from it. The hair clip or bobby pin should go through the middle of the curl. Use an additional pin or clip if needed, and place them so they crisscross.

Continue this process, working from side to side, top to bottom, until all your hair is pinned.

Spray your hair with hairspray.

Dry the hair. After you pin the curls, you can dry your hair by sitting under a hood dryer or by sleeping on the style overnight. Your hair should be dry in the morning.

Unclip the curls one at a time, starting at the bottom of your head. Style your hair with your fingers.

Tips & Warnings
The bigger sections of hair used, the looser the curls.
Tighter loops of hair will yield tighter curls.
It is better to use clips than bobby pins because bobby pins may crease your hair. However, when using clips, make sure they do not have any ridges.
