Spread Entry Offense

Coaches base their five-out spread-entry offense on the West Virginia offense. As coach Duane Silver explains in his playbook, a coach won't call the five-out as an entry play in the spread offense: It just happens. Unpredictable player movements on the court make the spread offense work best.

Instructions

    • 1

Initiate the offense by having player 4 set up in the right corner and player 5 set up in the left corner.

    • 2

Have player 2 move to the right wing just outside the 3-point line and player 4 move to the left wing just outside the 3-point line.

    • 3

Player 1 (point guard) takes the ball down the middle of the court to the edge of the mid-court circle.

    • 4

Have player 2 and 4 change places at the same time that players 3 and 5 change places.

    • 5

Have player 1 pass the ball to player 4.

    • 6

Have player 1 make a hard cut to the basket.

    • 7

Have player 5 break to the free-throw line then move to the top of the circle.

    • 8

Have player 3 take player 5's spot at the left wing.

    • 9

Have player 1 move from under the basket to the left corner, replacing player 3.

    • 10

Player 4 passes the ball to player 5.

    • 11

Have player 4 move down to the lane and screen for player 2.

    • 12

At the same time, have player 3 move down to the lane and screen for player 1.

    • 13

After screening down for players 1 and 2, both players 3 and 4 set their positions briefly below the foul line near the basket.

    • 14

Once player 1 reaches the left wing, player 5 passes the ball to him.

    • 15

Have player 5 screen for player 2 below the free-throw line.

    • 16

Have player 2 curl to the goal.

    • 17

Have player 1 pass the ball to player 2 for a lay-up.

    • 18

Have player 5 return to the top of the key after screening.
