How to Stop Bump Keys

How to Stop Bump Keys thumbnail
A regular lock is no match for a bump key.

Bump keys are locksmiths' tools which can open most standard door locks. When used legitimately, they can help locked-out owners get into their own homes. But burglars can also use them to enter a locked house and rob it. This puts not only your possessions at risk, but your family as well. This is why it's often a good idea to take preventative steps to prevent bump keys from working. There are several options. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a lock specifically designed to foil bump keys. Medeco and Abloy are two companies which specialize in this.

    • 2

Apply a spray lubricant to the lock's interior. This isn't as effective as a specialized lock, but it's cheaper.

    • 3

Install a chain lock. Since chains don't have a keyhole outside, they can't be opened with a bump key. This will help protect you when you're in the house, but, since you can't lock it when you leave, your house is still vulnerable when you're away.

    • 4

Purchase an electric keypad. Since this doesn't require a physical key at all, a bump key will be useless.
