How to Point a Domain Name

How to Point a Domain Name thumbnail
You must point your domain to your hosting name servers.

For a Web site to be properly displayed, the domain name must be pointed to the name servers associated with your Web hosting account. Your content is stored on the hosting account, and without connecting the domain name to the host, the content will not be displayed. You can point your domain to your servers by entering the name servers into your domain registrar's account.

Instructions

    • 1

Register a domain name with a certified registrar. This is the actual URL that visitors will type into their navigation bars to go to your site.

    • 2

Purchase a Web site hosting service account. This is where the content for your Web site will actually be stored online.

    • 3

Determine your Web site's name servers. All hosting accounts will receive a valid pair of name servers. Log in to your hosting account, and they will often be listed in your account details. Additionally, upon account creation, the majority of hosting companies will send an e-mail containing your name servers.

    • 4

Log in to your account with your domain registrar. Registrars will have an option close to your domain with a phrase similar to "Set Name Servers" or "Change Name Servers." Click on this button to point your domain to your hosting servers.

    • 5

Enter your name servers into the provided form. After changing your servers, the domain will have to propagate; it typically takes 24 hours to establish the connection.

    • 6

Test your Web site by typing your domain URL into an Internet browser's navigation bar. If the site loads correctly, you have successfully pointed your domain name to your hosting account.
