How to Grow Herbs in Pots From Seed

Growing herbs in pots is an enjoyable way to garden indoors.

Growing herbs in pots and starting them from seed is a great way to enjoy gardening during cold, winter months. The greenery of the herbs adds oxygen to the air, color to your home environment and healthy fresh herbs to enjoy for cooking or fragrance. Herbs grow at different rates so start your herbs from seed indoors in February if you live in a zone with cold winters. Once warm weather arrives, you can transplant most herbs outdoors or continue to enjoy your herb garden indoors. Grow herb seeds in a sunny location, and keep the soil moist.

Things You'll Need

• 2- to 4-inch clay pots
• Cookie sheet or baking tray
• Potting soil or seed-starting mix
• Herb seeds
• Craft sticks
• Permanent marker

Instructions

1. Place the clay pots on a cookie sheet or baking tray. This makes it easier to move the potted herbs and keeps water from spilling over or staining surfaces.

2. 

   Clay pots are sturdy for planting and are attractive.

   Fill the clay pots with potting soil or a seed-starting mix and moisten.

3. Place a few of each type of herb seed in a clay pot. Plant the seeds to a depth that is four times the width of the seed or follow directions on the seed packet. Cover the seeds with potting soil.

4. Write the name of each herb seed planted on a craft stick, using a permanent marker. Place the craft stick in the correct clay pot. This identifies the herbs until they grow and become distinctive.

5. Water the potted herbs until water drains from the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. Place your herb garden in a sunny location and water every few days, without allowing the soil to completely dry out.

Tips & Warnings

• Plant herb seeds in pots outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

• Keep an eye on cats as your herb garden grows. Cats love to eat fresh greens.
