How to Grow Astilbe From Seed

The perennial plant known as astilbe thrives in shady locations. During the early summer months, the plant produces feather-like plume flowers in pink, red, purple, salmon or white. The soft, feathery foliage resembles a fern. Plant height ranges from 18 inches to 5 feet. Propagation occurs from division of the plants rhizomes root system or from seeds. Gather astilbe seeds in the fall or purchase them from a seed dealer. Plant the seeds indoors in the spring six weeks prior to the last frost forecast. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Fill a plant tray with starting potting soil. The soil should contain abundant organic humus and many starter mixes offer additional fertilizing nutrients to help plant seeds germinate.

      Soak astilbe seeds for 24 hours prior to planting in a shallow pan. Use lukewarm water.

      Place the astilbe seeds into the starter trays on top of the soil. Add a 1/4-inch layer of starter soil across the seeds tops. Moisten the soil.

      Place the starter tray into a clear plastic bag to encourage germination. Close the plastic bag by folding the plastic under the starter tray.

      Place the starter trays in the a window with filtered sunlight. Keep the soil most around the seeds but do not allow it to become water-logged.

      Maintain a daytime temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. At night the temperature can safely dip to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Astilbe seeds require a temperature variance between daytime and nighttime to encourage germination.
