How to Troubleshoot an IBM ThinkPad A22M thumbnail
IBM A22M troubleshooting can be accomplished with a screwdriver and guitar pick.

While the IBM ThinkPad series of computers often receives high marks for build quality and toughness, technical issues can affect the monitor, keyboard, battery and more that may require your immediate attention. Troubleshooting to diagnose the source of a problem on an IBM ThinkPad A22M is not a process that requires a wealth of existing computer knowledge. Even if you have never attempted computer troubleshooting before, you can perform this procedure in your home with only a Phillips head screwdriver and a guitar pick.

Instructions

Check the AC adapter that connects to the back of the IBM ThinkPad A22M if the laptop appears to lack power. Make sure it is securely connected. Also, check the wall outlet where the AC adapter is plugged in. Try plugging the adapter into another wall outlet, just in case the current one is malfunctioning.

    • 2

Check your IBM ThinkPad A22M's battery if the AC adapter appears to be working but power is still an issue. Batteries deteriorate eventually and may fail to hold a charge. Disconnect the AC adapter and power off the ThinkPad, then flip the IBM over and locate the battery release mechanism on the bottom of the device, which can be found where the battery resides at the top center of the laptop's underside. Slide this release mechanism to disengage the battery to replace it.

Download new drivers for the ThinkPad's trackpad if it appears to be non-responsive. The trackpad of your ThinkPad computer is the touch-sensitive surface area at the bottom center of the keyboard that you use as a mouse replacement on laptops. It controls the cursor/pointer on your screen. Download the new TrackPad drivers from IBM's support site (see Resources). You will want to save the file under "Mouse/Trackpoint." There are two files available; select the one that corresponds to the version of Windows your ThinkPad A22M runs.

    • 4

Save the drivers to your ThinkPad's desktop so an easy-to-access icon is created for the file. You will be given the option to save the file to your desktop or elsewhere upon clicking to download the file. Once downloaded, double-click on the file icon on your desktop to install the drivers on your ThinkPad, then restart the computer.

Check the inverter cable for the IBM ThinkPad A22M if the monitor is not working but power is being received by the computer. Pop off the plastic seals that cover the screws along the bezel of the laptop's display.

    • 6

Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove all of these bezel screws.

    • 7

Use your finger to pry up on one edge of the bezel to begin to pop it loose. Be careful separating the bezel from the display, as there will be small plastic latches that must be disengaged. Wedging a thin, plastic object such as a guitar pick between the latches and the bezel may aid in bezel removal.

    • 8

Notice the inverter cable beneath the exposed display. It will be located at the bottom center of the display, now that the bezel is removed. Make sure the inverter cable is still connected to the inverter board just under it. If not, this is the source of your monitor's problems, as the backlight will cease to function with the cable disconnected.
