How to Feed Canned Salmon to Dogs

Save

Canned salmon is a healthy food source for dogs. Salmon is nutrient rich and it contains omega-3 fatty acids that promote bone and joint health. Salmon is a good addition to the diet and easily mixes with other food sources. Many brand name dog foods use salmon in their existing recipes but canned salmon is affordable and provides quality fish and not ground leftovers sourced from foreign fish markets.

Sourcing Salmon

Canned salmon is available through your local grocery store or through some pet stores. Look for salmon that is wild caught and sustainable. Most canned salmon is from the pink salmon species. Use salmon that is canned fresh and packed in water without salt. Excessive amounts of salt are poisonous for dogs. The majority of canned salmon available comes from Alaska and will say so on the label.

Dry Food Mixture

Mix the canned salmon with dry dog food to make it more flavorful and enticing to your dog. Do a mixture of roughly 30 percent salmon and 70 percent dry food. Mix with a spoon. Some dogs will only eat the salmon if you fail to mix the two. Cover and refrigerate the leftover salmon for the next meal. A single 6 ounce can will get you two or three meals depending on the size of your dog. Feed your dog 3 percent of his body weight daily. Split into two separate meals to spread the food throughout the day.

Making Your Own Food

Canned salmon is an excellent addition to homemade dog food. Numerous recipes are available using a combination of fish, vegetables and grains. White rice mixed with peas, carrots and salmon is a basic, nutritious meal that is easy to make. Dogs also like sweet potatoes, eggs and commercial nutritional supplements in homemade food. Consider making base food in bulk and freezing some for easy access. Add the canned salmon to the bulk food fresh each time you desire. Rotate tuna, sardines, beef and chicken with the salmon for variety.

Warning

  • Do not feed your dog cooked bones from chicken, pork or beef. Cooked bones splinter into sharp segments and create a health risk.

Salmon Treats

Keep a can of salmon in the refrigerator and use it for treats and rewards. Canned salmon packed fresh with salt is easy to manage. It breaks off in small chunks that you grab with your fingers and hand feed to the dog.
