Basketball league administrators can find literally hundreds of Web-based and downloadable desktop products to facilitate the creation of a schedule. Fortunately, managers with literally no cash resources available to create a schedule will find suitable tools. Those with greater resources will find more feature-rich products, all of which are available for a free trial.
Determine the type of schedule you need. Sports schedules come in two basic formats---the round-robin type and the tournament type.
Evaluate your budget. If you have literally nothing to spend on a scheduling tool, you can either download a free preformatted spreadsheet template or use a free Web-based tool. The Beverly Hills chapter of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) offers 16 downloadable Excel-based templates which can be used for any sport. InfoSports offers free downloadable tournament spreadsheet templates with detailed instructions on "how to" customizations such as points per win or tie and tie-breaker scenarios. Home Teams Online has a free Web-based scheduler which can be used for either a tournament or matchup format, and which can be downloaded in spreadsheet format. Splendid City Lite is a more robust free client which facilitates communication between the administrator and league coaches and managers, practice scheduling, and referee scheduling.
Match the features you need with the products available. Besides game scheduling, you may desire a scheduling tool with the following features: conversion of templates into Web-friendly versions; roster management; multilingual support; conflict resolution; networked communications with coaches and other administrators; feedback; print-friendly and operating-system compatibilities; score and standings trackers; and facility management. Splendid City Professional offers many of the above features. Galactix also offers a number of sophisticated features. The editors at CNET advocate the ATP Sports Scheduler for administrators whose priority is the management and scheduling of facilities and allocation of resources to those facilities.
