How to Paint a Rose
A rose is part of the plant family Rosaceae, which includes over 100 species of many colors. While painting a rose is as easy as five simple shapes and three paint colors, choosing which colors is up to you. While many rose paintings are more complex, starting off with a simple, unbloomed rose will help a beginner develop skills to use later.

- Paint brush
- Three paint colors
- Canvas or paper
- Water
- Paper plate
- Paper towel

Set up your painting area with a cup of clean water, a quarter-sized drop of each paint color (such as red, pink and green) on a paper plate or other container and your canvas or piece of paper on a flat surface or easel.

Dip your paint brush into the water cup and move it around a bit. Dry it off slightly by dabbing it onto the paper towel. Dip the paint brush into the first color that will be the main color of the rose, such as red.

Draw a backwards "S" shape with your paint brush on the canvas or paper. Dip your brush back into the red color and draw a front-facing "S" shape next to the backwards "S" so that the bottom tips of both shapes meet and connect.

Paint a large "V" shape in the middle of the two "S" shapes with the red paint so that the bottom of the "V" meets with the two ends of the "S" shapes. Paint a lower-case, cursive "m" shape at the top of the "V" so that the top of the "m" lines up with the tops of the "S" shapes (but does not touch them) and the bottom of the "m" is the same width of the top of the "V."

Let the paint dry. Rinse the red paint off of the paint brush in the water and dab it slightly on the paper towel. Dip it completely into the pink (or another secondary color) paint. Carefully paint in between the red paint lines so that the rose is colored in completely.

Rinse the paint brush in the water again and then dip it into the green (or third color) paint. Draw a stem starting at the point where the bottom of the two "S" shapes meet down to however long you'd like your stem to be. Paint a straight line or a curvy line, however you'd like. Add thorns to your stem by painting pointy triangles out of the stem. Let the painting dry.

Tips & Warnings
Add even more wispy red paint lines inside your rose to give it more depth.
Play around with mixing colors or adding backgrounds. Roses can be any color you want.
