How to Oil a Viking 64.40 Sewing Machine

How to Oil a Viking 64.40 Sewing Machine thumbnail
Proper oiling will keep your machine running well.

The proper amount of oil is essential for keeping a vintage sewing machine such as a Viking 64 running properly. If you put too much oil in the bobbin case, the oil will seep onto the thread, and your sewing will come to a halt when the thread lumps together in a large oily knot under the presser foot. If a machine is not oiled it will skip. Neglecting regular maintenance can damage your machine.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the bobbin compartment.

    • 2

Remove the bobbin case by opening the latch and pulling it straight out.

    • 3

Brush away any lint in the bobbin compartment.

    • 4

Place one drop of oil in the bottom of the bobbin compartment in the area where the bobbin case sits. This part of the machine is called the sewing hook.

    • 5

Replace the bobbin case and re-thread the machine.

    • 6

Sew a few rows of stitching on absorbent white scrap fabric to absorb any excess oil. Check for oil on the fabric and continue to sew until no more oil appears on the fabric.
