Embarq 768K DSL Modem Installation Instructions
The modem is the piece of hardware that allows your computer to access the web through an Internet service provider, such as an Embarq 768K DSL connection. Before accessing social-networking websites or trading emails with family, you need to properly set up your Embarq modem. Installing the modem is a simple process that doesn't require any extra tools and only consists of plugging in a few cables and checking a few settings.

Attach one end of an Ethernet cable to the yellow Ethernet port on the back of the Embarq modem. The port is labeled "10/100M."

Attach the other end either to the Ethernet port on the back of your computer, or to the Ethernet port on the back of your router if you are setting up a network. Connect the phone cord running from your wall jack to the phone port on the back of the Embarq modem.

Plug one end of the AC power adapter into the remaining open port on the modem. Attach the other end to an electrical outlet.

Press the Embarq modem's power button. Open a web browser and navigate to http://192.168.2.1. Type "1234" in the "Password" field and click "Login."

Type a new password to use for the modem in the "New Password" field. Type the password again in the "Re-Type Password" field and click "Apply."

Click the "Wizard Setup" link. Click "Mode" and choose "Routing." Click the "Multiplex" drop-down menu and choose "LLC." Click "Next."

Click the "Obtain IP Address Automatically" radio button and choose "Next." Select "Save Settings" to finish installing the Embarq modem.

Tips & Warnings
The Embarq modem comes with a yellow Ethernet cable, however, you can use any brand of Ethernet cable when installing the modem.
The modem includes a diagnostic tool to assist in troubleshooting connection problems. If you experience problems, navigate to http://192.168.2.1 and type in your password. Click "Login." Select the "Diagnostic" link underneath the "Maintenance" heading and follow the onscreen instructions.
