How to Convert a Dolby Digital Audio
Dolby Digital Audio, also known as AC3 audio, is a popular audio format for movies with surround sound. AC3 offers more audio channels in less space than two-channel stereo CD. If you do not have a program to convert your Dolby Digital Audio files, you will need to download one from the Internet. Among the many options include programs such as River Past Audio Converter, ImToo Audio Converter and Akram Audio Converter–all of which support AC3 conversion to many audio formats, including MP3, WAV and AAC audio. Note that if using River Past, you will need to download an open-source AC-3 decoder before you begin.

River Past Audio Converter

Download and install the latest version of River Past Audio Converter. Agree to the licensing terms and launch the program.

Download and install the AC3 decoder (filter) from an open-source website (see Resources). This will ensure AC3 conversion in River Past.

Load your Dolby Digital Audio in River Past by clicking the "Add Files..." button in the upper left corner of your screen. Locate your audio in the pop-up window and select the "AC-3 Dolby Digital" option from the drop-down "Files of Type" list.
Click "Open."

Click on the toggle button next to the "Format" option and select an output audio option.

Click the "Output Directory" panel and press the "Browse..." button to designate a save location on your hard drive for your converted file(s).
Press the "Convert" button to begin the conversion.
ImToo Audio Converter

Launch ImToo Audio Converter after download and installation are complete. Click the "Add" button in the upper-right corner of the screen to open a new Windows Explorer pop-up menu. Locate your AC3 and open in ImToo.

Select an encoder type from the "Encoder" combo-box at the bottom of the screen. (You may click "Settings" to change specific options. For most conversions, you will want to use ImToo's default settings.)

Click the "Browse..." output folder button to name your file and set a save location on your disc drive.

Press "Encode" to begin the conversion. You may track each file's progress in the program's main window.
Akram Audio Converter

Download and install Akram Audio Converter. Agree to the terms of use and launch the program.

Click the "Add Files" button to locate your input audio in the Windows Explorer pop-up window. Open your file(s) in Akram.

Choose one of the "Output File Options" from the bottom panel. Choices include WMA, MP3, OGG and WAV.

Enable the "Selected Folder" button in the "Destination Dir" menu and click the "Browse..." button. Choose a folder on your hard drive where you want to save your files.
Click "Convert" to begin the AC3 conversion.

Tips & Warnings
An AC-3 decoder tells your computer how to read the audio file. You will only need this if using River Past.
