How to Reload the Colt 45 Short Barrel

The venerable Colt .45 is a mainstay of Old West mythology. The single-action revolver was first introduced in 1873 as the primary sidearm for members of the U.S. military, and over the years has earned a variety of memorable nicknames, such as the "Peacemaker," the "Hog-Leg," and the "Six-Shooter." These guns are still among the most recognizable weapons ever created, and are sought after equally by collectors and laymen alike. The Colt .45 Single-Action Army revolver can be confusing to the new owner, however, in that it is not immediately apparent how one is supposed to load the bullets into the cylinder. Fortunately, once you have it down, it's not a difficult process to repeat.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the hammer of the Colt .45 back slowly until you hear two audible clicks. This will put the hammer at the "half-cocked" position.

    • 2

Locate the loading gate on the right side of the gun. It is a piece of metal that, with the gun half-cocked, will be able to swing out to the side. Refer to the link in the resources section if you want to see a picture of the loading gate.

    • 3

Open the loading gate by swinging it out to the side. You will now be able to look into the loading gate at an empty cylinder in the revolver.

    • 4

Load the .45 shells into the revolver, one at a time, through the loading gate. Spin the cylinder to an empty chamber after each bullet is loaded into the revolver.

    • 5

Close the loading gate after the last shell has been loaded and return the hammer to the "safety notch" position. Your Colt .45 is now loaded.
