How to Obtain a Registered Name Change in Oakland County
In Oakland County, Michigan, an adult may change his or her name legally by petitioning the court. Once the court has been petitioned, the name change process can take up to 91 days. Oakland County residents petitioning for a name change must be residents of Oakland County for at least one year prior to applying for a change of name.

Log on to the Oakland County Michigan Clerk's website and click on the "Departments" tab.

Scroll down and click on the "Clerk/Register of Deeds" tab.

Scroll down to the "Legal Records" tab and click on "Name Changes."

Print out and fill out the Name Change Form or pick one up at the Clerk of Court's office.

Mail or drop off the completed form to the Clerk of Court along with the $150 filing fee. The Oakland County Clerk of Court is located at 1200 North Telegraph Department 413, Pontiac, MI.

Visit your local law enforcement agency to be fingerprinted. Your local law enforcement agency will submit your fingerprints on an RI-8 Form, along with your check for $49.25 made payable to the State of Michigan, to the Oakland County Clerk of Court.

Submit a check for $71.30 to Legal News once the Oakland County Clerk of Court has notified you of your hearing date. Your petition for a change of name must be printed in this publication prior to your hearing.

Attend your hearing, where the presiding judge will approve or deny your petition for a name change.
