Getting a GED avoids finishing high school.

A GED is one way that many students younger than 18 are getting out of high school and getting a higher education at a younger age. Though it is common for those 18 or older to get a GED if they have not graduated from high school, younger students are limited in when they are able to stop school and get a GED. It is impossible to get a GED below the age of 16, but many students are working toward getting a GED at 16, which is possible in most states.

Instructions

    • 1

Un-enroll from high school. A GED is given to those that have not graduated high school and are not currently attending high school. Students must un-enroll from school and be given proof of un-enrollment.

    • 2

Obtain a letter from the university, college or vocational school that requires a GED for financial aid or to enroll as a student. Anyone below the age of 18 trying to get a GED must have something set up, so they will be going to higher education that requires a GED.

    • 3

Fill out an age-waiver application. Most states require that students be at least 17, though many also have a minimum age of 18 for the GED testing. The exceptions are those who fill out the age-waiver application and have the letter from a college or university on paper that has the college letterhead. Age-waiver applications can be obtained through the GED office.

    • 4

Send the age-waiver application and letter to the GED state testing office. It will send a letter of approval when the waiver has been granted.

    • 5

Show the letter from the GED state testing office to the officials at the testing facility. At this point, it will allow students as young as 16 to take the GED test.
