How to Make a Shawl Stick Pin

How to Make a Shawl Stick Pin thumbnail
A safety pin will hold a shawl together but also snag it; a shawl stick pin can provide hold without snags.

A lacy shawl can add style and sophistication to any outfit. However, the problem with some of these shawls is that they fall off your shoulders too easily. You can avoid this problem when you wear a shawl pin; a stick-style shawl pin will hold even a delicate shawl in place without tearing at the fabric of the shawl itself. Make your own shawl stick pin with some craft store buys and an afternoon's worth of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Try out a few beads on the hat pin finding to see what will fit; the beads need to slide on easily, so you may have to try a few before you find one or two that fit. Choose beads that will match the shawl you plan to wear with the shawl pin.

    • 2

Slide one to three small beads onto the end of the hat pin and hold them in place.

    • 3

Slide a crimp bead onto the hat pin and pinch it with the flat-nosed pliers. Pinching the crimp bead will hold it in place under the decorative beads you have chosen, thus holding all of the beads in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use jewelry wire in place of the hat pin finding. Simply cut the wire to the desired length and flatten the ends or bend them with the pliers after adding the beads, then file down the tip.
