How to Hide a Spare Key
While some people do not like to hide spare keys outside of their house for fear of them being found, others view it as an essential emergency measure. There are certain tips you can take into account when hiding your spare key, and certain dangers you should stay away from at all costs. Avoid hiding your spare key in an obvious place. Do not place it under door mats, above door frames, in your mailbox or under out-of-place objects.

Do not use novelty key chains. These items are likely to stand out. Use the most discreet object as possible. Often, just the key by itself is a good idea to keep the item as small and unobtrusive as possible.

Hide a key inside of a different secure location. Use either a safe or a key box, or hide your key in a garage with a keypad passcode. This way, whoever is picking up the emergency key can simply be left with the code.

Hide your key in an original place. Go with the flow of the room and try to keep it somewhere out of sight.

Try hiding decoy keys to throw a potential criminal off of the scent. This may frustrate them and force them to give up their search.
