Directions for Crazy Quilt Patchwork
A crazy quilt is a Victorian dream---a combination of elegant and luxurious fabrics, lace, ribbon, buttons and embroidery. Each crazy quilt square features a muslin base. The construction method of the patchwork design is fairly simple, but basic knowledge of a few embroidery stitches is needed to make an authentic crazy quilt. The crazy quilt was hugely popular during the 1800s in the era of England's Queen Victoria, when every upper-class lady was well versed in the fine arts of needlecraft.

Things You'll Need
- 2 yards unbleached muslin
- Assortment of velvet and silk fabric scraps
- Lace
- Decorative buttons
- Thread
- Embroidery thread
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Ruler

Cut the unbleached muslin into a square measuring 12 inches by 12 inches.

Cut scraps of velvet and silk fabric into irregular shapes that can be fitted into the muslin square. Approximately five different fabrics will be placed into each muslin square.

Attach the scraps by hand-sewing each, one at a time, to the muslin square with a straight stitch. Use a 1/4-inch seam on the wrong side of the scrap fabric. Fold the fabric over at the seam to display the right side.

Cut the fabric scraps to match the borders of the muslin square after all the scraps have been sewn on.

Sew on the lace and ribbon embellishments with matching thread and small straight stitches. Sew on buttons. Embroider decorative stitches over the fabric scraps

Continue to create more crazy quilt squares using the same method. Sew the squares together to make the quilt top size of your choice, which will be layered with batting and a quilt backing and sewn together
