Instructions for Making Jersey Rag Rugs

Instructions for Making Jersey Rag Rugs thumbnail
Use old T-shirts to make a jersey rag rug.

Get rid of that pile of old t-shirts by making a jersey rag rug. Comfy jersey t-shirts that have been washed and tumble dried over and over result in a soft and cushy, multicolored rug. Crocheted into a 3- by 5-foot rug, those old shirts are put to good use. This project requires knowledge of the basic crochet stitches. The jersey fabric strips are not sewn together, but added when the last 2 inches of the previous strip is left for extra texture.

Cut the t-shirts into 1 1/2 inch wide strips by beginning at the bottom of the t-shirt and spiraling around the entire t-shirt body. Cut the arms into 1 1/2 inch wide strips in the same manner.

    • 2

Wind all the t-shirt strips into a ball.

    • 3

Crochet a chain that measures 3 feet long, using one or more fabric strips. Chain two more.

    • 4

Crochet a single crochet in the third chain loop from the end. Single crochet in each chain loop. Chain two.

    • 5

Single crochet in each single crochet stitch. Chain two. Repeat this row until the rug measure 5 feet in length. End off by slipping the jersey strip in the last loop on hook and cutting.
