How to Match Symbols to Stock Names

Individual stock prices are tracked on the markets by their assigned stock symbol. In the U.S. stock symbols are usually three or four letter combination. A few companies have just one or two letter symbols, like T for AT&T, F or Ford and GE for General Electric. Some companies pick symbols to reflect their business like BAGL for the Einstein Noah Restaurant Group.

Instructions

    • 1

Look-up stock values and their symbols at one of the major financial information web pages, Yahoo Finance or Google Finance.

    • 2

Enter the stock symbol or company name in the Quotes or Get Quotes box. The financial websites allow you to obtain a company name from a symbol or the symbol from the company name.

    • 3

Select the correct stock symbol from the pull down list that appears if your are entering the company name. Entering a stock symbol will take you directly to a price page that gives the company's name and other financial information.
