Instructions for Making Spiral Hemp Bracelets
Hemp is a natural fiber that has been used for jewelry making and clothing design. Making hemp bracelets is a similar process to tying friendship bracelets from embroidery floss. Gimp lanyards are also made using a similar process. For simple hemp bracelets there are two basic knots, the flat knot and the spiral knot. The spiral knot is slightly more complicated and produces a bracelet with a corkscrew design, rather than one that sits flat on the wrist.

Begin by cutting two strands of the hemp cord about four times as long as the desired length of the finished bracelet. The strands should be the same length. Fold the strands in half and tie together in an overhand knot, leaving a half-inch loop at the top. You now have four strands.
-
2
Separate the strands by pulling the left and right strands away from the two strands in the middle. The middle strands will be the base strands, while the right and left strands are the knotting strands.

Take the left-hand strand over the base strands and under the right hand strand. Take the right-hand strand under base strands and over the left hand strands. This is the basic knot to create the spiral. Pull tightly.

Repeat this process to create a simple, spiral knotted hemp bracelet. Be sure to pull tightly after each knot. With each knot, bring the left-hand strand over the base strands and under the righthand strand. Bring the right-hand strand under the base strands and over the left-hand strand. Pull tightly.

Continue until the bracelet reaches the desired length. Thread all four strands through a pony bead and secure with a knot. Clip away any excess hemp. Place the bracelet on your wrist and push the pony bead through the loop at the end to hold it in place.
