How to Find a House for Rent for People With a Low Income thumbnail
Low-income housing programs provide affordable units.

An income level less than twice the federal poverty threshold is considered low-income, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty. Low-income families face unique challenges when trying to find affordable housing. In addition to the expense of rental payments, low-income families may be vulnerable to unlivable conditions. As a result, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development manages several programs. To find a low-income rental unit, it is helpful to use a combination of resources---networking, HUD and subsidy programs, for example.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) office. HUDs goal is "to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all," according to the department's website. As a result, HUD administers several programs for low-income families. Contact your local HUD rental assistance division to inquire about affordable housing units, the Housing Choice Voucher program or a public housing program.

Apply for a subsidized housing program. The Housing Choice Voucher program---also known as Section 8---provides a federal subsidy for low-income families. Contact your local Public Housing Authority to determine if you are eligible. Keep in mind many PHAs have long waiting lists to obtain a voucher.

Locate Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) properties. The LIHTC program is an indirect federal subsidy, according to HUD. Participating properties receive tax credits when they agree to rent a portion of their units to low-income tenants. Use HUD's LIHTC Database to locate apartments in your community.

Speak to people in your network. Your family, friends, acquaintances or co-workers may have access to valuable information. Someone may know a property owner looking to rent a unit at an affordable price.
